Mapping

I illustrate the information you wish to show to your clients or readership succinctly and designed in a way to suit your publication. From one-off events maps, map series to atlases.

I have made maps for outdoor display, print, web and apps for smartphones.

I have supplied maps to companies in South Africa, Singapore, Australia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and United States.

There is one map displayed on Hurtigruten's cruise ship, the MS Fram, touring the Arctic and Antarctic.

In producing such marvellously clear and informative maps and end-papers, the cartographer, John Plumer, has made an enormous contribution.
Jeremy Archer, author, Away at Christmas. Elliot & Thompson Ltd

In the UK I create maps for newspapers, monthly magazines, county tourist organisations, wildlife trusts, estate agents, national and international book publishers.

how I work

I can deliver the data and design. I use map data I have accumulated in 14 years of freelance mapping with up-to-date publications, and the growing amount of open data available by national mapping agencies and governments.

I use a combination of GIS (Geographic Informations Systems) for data retrieval and analysis, and graphics design packages to illustrate. I work on PC and Apple Mac platforms.

JP Map Graphics Ltd is the company name I work under. I am, for all essential purposes, a freelance cartographer.

My company was incorporated in 1998, originally as London Map Graphics Ltd.  Having moved to Exeter, Devon, to minimize production costs and take advantage of the growth of telecommunications, JP Map Graphics has suited better.

Month in, month out, John provides us with a great selection of maps - on time, to brief and lovely to look at.

About me

John PlumerI am currently studying for an MSc in GISystems and Science on a part-time basis from Kingston University, London. I graduated from Oxford Polytechnic in 1991 in Geography and Cartography with an Honorary Degree.

From 1992 to 1999 I worked in Covent Garden, London, as Cartographic Designer at Dorling Kindersley. Whilst at DK I designed the map specifications for some of their atlases.

Clients

I am the cartographer for the Geographical Magazine, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) monthly journal. I have supplied the maps for this journal for 10 years.

While I have said it before, I would like to further thank you for the maps, they are perfect–exactly what we wanted, in fact you exceeded our expectations.
Alex Cameron, Senior Designer & Art Director, Marketing Communications WEXAS TRAVEL.

In 2010 and 2011 I have supplied maps to The Sunday Times Magazine, National Geographic Traveller (UK) magazine, Dive magazine, ABTA magazine, CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), North Devon Plus, Knight Frank Estate Agents, DK Eyewitness Guides, Rough Guides, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Eliot & Thompson Publishers.

It is true most of my work comes from 'word of mouth' and I get recommended from one client to another. Through this website I am able to show the breadth of work I can produce.

Thank you so much for all your hard work. Would love for you to help me next time.
Alyson Waller, Deputy Art Director, The Sunday Times Magazine
